If you simply choose a cheaper banknote counter it can be a false economy if you then end up with the counting machine frequently pausing with errors due to an inability to handle the volumes or types of notes you are counting. You may even end up counting the cash notes manually by hand if the note counting machine cannot be relied upon.

We explain below some of the terminology used for note counters and the factors you should consider when choosing the right bank note counter for your business or organisation, taking into account the money currency or currencies you will be using, the volumes of notes you will count, the typical condition of the notes, the experience of the operating staff, the level of security checks you require and the frequency with which you will use the machine.

Note Counter Format

Our bank note counters are available in 2 formats: portable handheld note counters and desktop note counters. The portable money machines are designed for mobile money counting use. The desktop note counters are built for bank, retail and office use.

Portable note counters are suited for counting or verifying low volumes of banknotes and are popular for counting cash with car dealers, debt collectors and market traders.

Desktop note counters are suitable for retail, cash office and bank, post office and bureau de change use. They are available in top-loading and rear-loading designs.

Note Counting Speed

The operating speed of bank note counters is usually measured in notes per minute. These range from 600 notes per minute to over 2000 notes per minute. Many of the advanced machines have variable note counting speeds. In basic counting mode, they operate at full speed. If counterfeit checks are activated, the note counting machine will operate at a slightly lower speed. Counting machines with adjustable speed settings allow you to set the speed to the optimum level to balance speed and reliability.

Hopper Capacity

The hopper capacity relates to how many banknotes can be placed on the note counter at a time. The entry-level machines will handle around 100 notes, the higher specification note counting machines have a capacity of 200-350+ notes.

If the note counter has a batching facility, it will pause for the batch to be removed before taking more notes from the hopper.

Error Detection

The more sophisticated note counters have advanced Error Detection features which allow the counting machine to identify and report or cope with problems such as new banknotes being stuck together, folded notes, half notes and torn notes.

Counterfeit Detection

Counterfeit Detection allows the note counter to identify and alert the operator on suspicious forged notes. Different types and levels of counterfeit checking are available that yield different levels of reliability and accuracy. Basic machines may only carry out checks for Ultra Violet (markings). The more sophisticated note counters will perform a whole range of counterfeit checks including Infra-Red (IR), Magnetic Ink (MG), Magnetic/Metallic Thread (MT) and Size (2d and 3d). The sensitivity levels for the counterfeit checks on advanced machines can be adjusted to avoid false alarms.

If you will be counting and checking multiple currencies, the different counterfeit checks can be enabled and disabled as required for each currency, as some counterfeit checks are not suitable for some currencies.

If new banknotes are introduced or the design is changed in the future, you may need to have the software updated on your equipment and pay the associated update cost and carriage charges provided you have purchased a unit which is updatable. High end machines such as Glory GFS counters may require a chargeable engineer call-out to update the software and currency templates. Some banknote counters can be purchased with an update cable and software so you can simply purchase the new program and install it yourself without having to return the counting equipment or book an engineer for update.

Value Counting

Value counting is a feature which identifies the particular denomination of each banknote and then counts the actual monetary value of the notes, rather than just the quantity of notes. Machines which offer value counting are usually designed for particular currencies, so check that your required currency is supported if you require the value counting feature.

Basic value counting machines will provide an overall total as well as a total for each denomination. They will not sort the notes. More sophisticated value note counters will also sort the counted notes. Higher specification machines are available to face and orient all the notes in the same direction too.

On Value Counting machines, the software may need to be updated if new banknotes are introduced in the future. This service will incur a charge.

Note Machine Maintenance

Due to the volumes of paper which pass through friction bank note counters, paper dust can build up regularly inside the machine as well as the odd paper clip, staple or sticky tape. Most of our note counters are supplied with a cleaning kit which you should use regularly to keep the counting machines mechanism clean, clear and dust-free to help avoid operational and mechanical problems. A dust cover should also be used if the note counter is not in use.

Batching Feature

The Batching feature on our note counters allows you to specify a batch size at the start of a count. The note counter will pause when it reaches the batch size, allowing you to remove the batch of notes. You can then resume the counting for the next batch, either automatically or by pressing a resume button on the note counter.

Auto-Start

On some money counting machines, you are required to press a 'start' button after placing banknotes in the hopper. Machines wih the 'Auto-Start' feature will initiate counting automatically after detecting the presence of banknotes in the hopper.

Most machines have Auto-Stop too so the rollers stop automatically when there are no more banknotes in the hopper.

With most of our bank note counters, you can count banknotes in basic counting mode to count the quantity of notes. But other features like value counting of amount and counterfeit note checking will not work on all machines with Scottish or Northern Ireland issue banknotes - they are only designed to operate on £Sterling notes issued by the Bank of England and other specified world currencies.
